The Anglican Church in the Democratic Republic of Congo is responding to a serious Ebola outbreak affecting communities in the east of the country, particularly in Ituri Province, where the outbreak is currently centred.
The situation is deeply concerning. More than 1,000 confirmed cases have now been reported, with the disease continuing to spread in some areas. The outbreak is taking place in a region already affected by conflict, displacement and limited access to health services, making the response especially challenging.
Church leaders report that insecurity, misinformation, community fear and limited medical infrastructure are all complicating efforts to contain the disease. There is also concern that population movement, including among displaced communities, could increase the risk of further spread.
Despite these challenges, the Anglican Church has already begun responding through its dioceses and local church networks. Even before external funding was received, local churches mobilised their own resources to purchase soap, install handwashing stations, and begin awareness-raising activities in churches, schools and communities.
With support from Anglican partners, this work is now expanding. Current activities include training faith leaders, distributing public health messages, supporting radio awareness campaigns, providing handwashing facilities, and working with local health authorities to ensure communities receive accurate information about Ebola prevention, symptoms and referral pathways. Churches are playing a particularly important role because they are trusted within local communities. In contexts where fear and misinformation can undermine public health measures, local clergy and faith leaders are well placed to share clear messages, encourage early reporting, support safe practices and care for affected families.
The Diocese of Goma is also strengthening preparedness, with plans to train clergy, school leaders and community representatives in Ebola prevention and response. This includes using lessons and resources developed during previous Ebola outbreaks in the region.
Anglican Missions is continuing to work with the Anglican Alliance and other Communion partners to monitor the situation and support the response of the Anglican Church in Congo.
