Our Emergency Appeals respond to requests for aid from local communities who have been affected by an emergency. Sometimes this means supporting hospitals in conflict zones, or providing monetary and logistical support for a severe flood response. No matter what the emergency is, we work to support local communities through local Anglican initiatives.
Our appeals are done in partnership with the Anglican Alliance, which means that our support is given alongside the support of Anglican agencies across the globe. We work as a whole to respond with efficiency and unity, seeking to deliver aid as quickly as possible after an emergency occurs.

Churches are remarkable at responding to emergencies; we have witnessed their strengths in disaster response firsthand, from the response of Ōmāhu Marae after Cyclone Gabrielle, to the steadfast service of Al Ahli Hospital in the Gaza strip.
Not only do churches have a deep connection with local communities, but they provide large meetings spaces, manaakitanga expertise, volunteers structures, and a commitment to community care. Anglican church response initiatives are able to focus on all aspects of wellbeing, from food and shelter support, to psychosocial care. The permanent nature of Anglican churches also means that their response initiatives are long-term and sustainable, providing humanitarian assistance long after other NGOs have left.
This is why we work alongside agencies from across the Anglican Alliance to support local churches after emergencies. It’s not just a duty of care for the most vulnerable, but a commitment to our whanau who should never face emergencies alone.
The Church Initiatives that we support through our Emergency Appeals often include:
- Church food banks and supplies hubs, which are open for public access
- Care baskets for vulnerable families, from agriculture kits to Water and Sanitation (WASH) kits
- Psychosocial and trauma support and care teams
- Health facility functioning costs
Frequently Asked Questions
Humanity means that a response must address human suffering wherever it is found. Humanity is the foundation of restoring human dignity and basic human rights.
Neutrality says that humanitarian organisations must not take sides in hostilities, nor engage in any politocal, racial, religious, or ideological controversies.
Impartiality is the idea that humanitarian response should be based solely on the needs of an individual, prioritising objective need without discrimination. It does not prioritise groups based on affiliation to any social category.
The final principle is independence, meaning that a humanitarian action must remain autonomous from the political, economic, military, or other objectives that any actor may hold.
Often, a local church community already has the resources needed to respond. Other times, a disaster occurs at such a large scale that the churches require additional financial assistance to respond proportionately. In this case, the Anglican Alliance will open up an appeal, and participating organisations, including Anglican Missions, can join the appeal to raise money in support of local church initiatives.
