In the early hours of Wednesday 26 August, a surge of water, ice and debris tore down the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers in northern Nepal. Rasuwa district has been hit hardest, with the damage reaching downstream into Nuwakot, Dhading and neighbouring areas.
Homes, roads, bridges, hydropower stations and power lines have been destroyed, and damaged transport links are making it hard to reach the worst-affected communities. As search and rescue continues, the need is shifting quickly to emergency shelter, safe water, sanitation and protection, with a growing risk of waterborne disease.
Whole settlements have been swept away, and thousands have lost their homes and livelihoods. With roads and bridges destroyed, many communities are still cut off, and the full scale of the disaster is only beginning to emerge.
