According to a report from our contracting partners in Fiji, work in Waidradra settlement is underway. Last week in Waidradra, MMM Fiji began laying the foundations for two bathroom facilities and four water tank installations for community use. Not only did they bring two NZ volunteers along, but there was significant local participation and enthusiasm, with people of all ages joining in the effort of digging, wheelbarrowing, and constructing the foundations for these improvements. The local community even provided the group with delicious meals.
MMM reported that the sites have some difficult building conditions, with soft soil ground requiring deep foundations, and the layout limiting access for construction material delivery. Despite this, the community’s many hands are making light work of it.
Depicted below is MMM’s design plan for the ablution blocks. Each will contain two gender-separate latrines, two showers, and a laundry basin, all connected to a reliable water source. The team’s design is extremely durable, prioritising functionality and longevity.
We are looking forward to seeing the completion of these toilet blocks and water tanks. MMM Fiji is equipped to continue their installment between September 7-25, when they will have help from additional MMM Fiji workers and a group of NZ volunteers.
