Two powerful earthquakes have struck Venezuela causing widespread loss of life.

The earthquakes were magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes, striking north-central Venezuela.

The earthquakes have caused massive damage. Buildings have collapsed, power infrastructure has been disrupted and hospitals are overflowing with injured.

International support is flowing into a country already facing severe humanitarian pressure. At the start of 2026, 7.9 million people in Venezuela needed humanitarian support. Needs are expected to shift quickly from search and rescue to shelter, health care, psychosocial support, livelihoods and long-term recovery.

1,450 people are dead with more than 3,100 injured.

Hundreds of buildings have collapsed or are badly damaged, and tens of thousands of people are still reported missing or unaccounted for. More than 12,000 people have been displaced from their homes.

How Anglican Missions is responding

We are working through trusted Anglican partners already connected to communities in Venezuela.

Anglican Missions is in immediate contact with Anglican Alliance partners, including Episcopal Relief & Development and Alongside Hope, and with the Episcopal Diocese of Venezuela.

The Diocese has indicated that immediate priorities include food, safe water, health support and shelter. Anglican Missions has pledged $5,000 NZD for immediate assistance, and will update this appeal page as our partners assessments are confirmed.

Funds given to this appeal will help local Anglican partners respond to urgent needs and adapt as recovery priorities become clearer.

Why support the Episcopal Diocese of Venezuela?

The Diocese is rooted in the communities now facing grief, displacement and recovery.

The Episcopal Diocese of Venezuela is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion and is based in the country affected by the quakes. Through diocesan leadership, clergy and congregations, the Church can help identify urgent needs, support vulnerable households and serve communities without discrimination.

By giving through Anglican Missions, you help resource a local Church response shaped by people on the ground, supported by the wider Anglican Alliance and connected to international humanitarian partners.

Immediate response priorities

The first stage will focus on life-saving and life-restoring support which includes:
  • Food and safe water for families cut off from normal supplies.
  • Health support, including basic medical needs and access to care.
  • Emergency shelter and essential household items for people unable to return home.
  • Psychosocial and pastoral care for grieving families, displaced people, children and responders.
  • Recovery support as needs shift toward livelihoods, repairs and longer-term rebuilding.
