A powerful earthquake hit Vanuatu on December 17.

The earthquake’s centre was 37 kilometres west of Port Vila, on the island of Efate, at a depth of 57 kilometers. The earthquake caused serious damage to infrastructure, and there at least 14 confirmed fatalities, with over 200 people reported injured.

Many areas are without power, road access and the ability to communicate. There are also growing concerns about access to safe water.

Water is a current priority

Donate to help others access safe water.

The water supply has been cut off and there are confirmed reports of damage to 2 reservoirs in the Ohlen area that service Port Vila.

Through the Anglican Alliance, your donations will go towards funding for drinking water, containers, and transportation costs, as well as for providing food and psychosocial support to those affected.

$68 will buy a food relief pack for a family (ACOM is seeking to provide 100 packs)

$32 will buy a carton of 1.5L bottles of water (ACOM is seeking to provide 200 cartons)

$800 will fund a volunteer to provide psycho-social counselling as part of the response (10 volunteer counsellors will be deployed)

Communications are still strained

Help us purchase Starlink units.

Internet and mobile communications are down across Vanuatu. The main provider for cellphone coverage, Digicel, is working to restore mobile communications as of the 18th of December. There are intermittent improvements in mobile to mobile calls in Efate, but the southern interchange cable providing internet to the island is damaged.

A communications team is currently working on getting the landing station for the Fibre cable up and running.

Starlink was approved for use in Vanuatu in March 2024 and this is the main means of communication along with satellite phones for international communication.

Your donations will go towards providing the Anglican Church of Melanesia Starlink units to help restore communications from the church out of the islands.

Psychosocial support

People will need ongoing help.

With any significant disaster events, there will be lingering trauma for the people and places affected by the event. The main hospital is full and struggling to cope with the rising number of injured. Ongoing counselling and psychosocial support will be vital to help people be more resilient and better equipped mentally to handle any future events or lingering trauma.

$800 will fund a volunteer to provide psycho-social counselling as part of the response (10 volunteer counsellors will be deployed)

Your financial support is most helpful

It's difficult and expensive to send physical goods.

In the wake of a natural disaster or emergency, it is natural to want to help. In the very early stages of relief, particularly as power and communications still remain down, the physical needs of those affected are difficult to fully understand. Well intentioned donations of physical items like blankets, clothing, toys etc can often become an unintentional burden in these early stages, as they take extra resources to store, ship and allocate.

We act primarily as a mobiliser of resources and funds. Through partnerships with other development and aid agencies in New Zealand, as well as the Anglican Church, we are able to mobilise physical resources like food, water and tools to where they are needed. We also mobilise the church to give financially to all those in need, and use these funds to purchase required items.
We will keep you updated about the outcomes of the projects through our newsletter and articles on our website. Make sure you sign up for our newsletter to keep up to date with the progress of this appeal.
