Informal Settlements often need additional WASH support

In Fiji, informal settlements are comprised of individuals from across the 14 national provinces, primarily of Melanesian or Indo-Fijian descent. Most informal settlements have no legal land tenure agreements, resulting in government neglect and no access to basic services including water, electricity, and septic systems.

As such, these settlements are forced to access these services in their own way, often resulting in dangerous practices such as drinking from unprotected water sources and utilising unsanitary latrines with fragile, leak-prone septic systems.

This situation is compounded by the risks they face from climate change; because most informal settlements lie at urban margins, often bordering rivers or the coast, they are highly prone to flooding during periods of high rainfall. These floods not only damage already-fragile infrastructure, but flood any existing septic systems, carrying diseased waste into the settlements. This is why informal settlements consistently experience higher rates of under-5 mortality from disease-borne diarrhoea, as well as higher rates of mosquito-related diseases such as Dengue and Zika.

Improving WASH infrastructure in informal settlements is a direct way to make a huge difference in the resilience and wellbeing of these communities. Partner with us to support WASH infrastructure in informal settlements through your donation to our Water and Sanitation Programme.

Yalava Settlement

In Yalava settlement, Anglican Missions is working with local partners to construct two new ablution blocks, each with two toilets, two showers, and a laundry basin. These will replace the pit toilet and tin-walled showers previously used by the community

Waidradra Settlement

In Waidradra, the Anglican church is working alongside all of the churches across the community to both maintain existing WASH infrastructure such as latrines, water tanks, and showers, and install new infrastructure for community members who currently lack access.

Nadawa Settlement

In Nadawa, Anglican Missions is focusing on improving access to emergency water storage through water tank installation, and constructing gender-separate latrines to improve hygiene and sanitation, especially for women and girls.
